“Hiya, Pavlov.”
The civilian technician from the Crime Scene Unit smiled and shook her head. “The name’s Jean, Lieutenant. Odd name with Pavlov, maybe—maybe I should have been Olga or Tatiana or something—but it’s what my parents called me.”
“I’m always slow to call people by their first names,” said Columbo. “Women, especially. I don’t want to seem too familiar.”
“Columbo—If we're going to talk about semen and pubic hair, we can hardly go on being formal.”
“Uhh… I guess so.”
“We found what you were looking for. There were drops of semen on the front seat of Gunnar Svan’s Mercedes. Also hair, some long and straight, some short and curly. The curly hair looks for all the world like pubic hair. We've sent the semen samples to the DNA lab in Sacramento to see if it came from Svan. The hair—” She shrugged.
“I can maybe help you out on that, Jean. When I interviewed Miss Karlsen, I asked her for some strands of hair. She jerked them out. I—” He reached into his raincoat pocket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper, which he opened to disclose the strands of hair. “Sorry—Guess I should have turned those in to the evidence room. But hair—”
“Hair doesn’t change, Lieutenant. It would have been nice to have a better evidence track.”
“I hope the case doesn't turn on whether or not the hair found in Svan's car was Miss Karlsen’s,” said Columbo. “I hope we'll have a stronger case than that. I mean, like—Okay, she had sex with him in his car. We're not trying to prove that. Or even when. But it'd be useful to know if she did or didn’t. Just useful. Not vital.”
